Northern Europe: Ecolabel becomes new requirement for textiles

The Nordic countries’ new requirements for textiles under the Nordic Ecolabel are part of a growing demand for product design, stricter chemical requirements, increasing attention to quality and longevity, and a ban on burning unsold textiles.

Clothing and textiles are the fourth most environmentally and climate-damaging consumer sector in the EU. There is therefore an urgent need to reduce the impact on the environment and climate and move towards a more circular economy that uses textiles and recycles materials over the long term. One area where Nordic ecolabel requirements are tightened is in product design. In order to ensure that textiles are designed to be recyclable so that they can become part of a circular economy, the Nordic ecolabel has strict requirements for unwanted chemicals and bans plastic and metal components for decorative purposes only. Another new requirement for Nordic ecolabel textiles is that manufacturers must measure how much microplastics are released when washing synthetic textiles in the future.
